Tsawwar… Skander Khlif

“A photograph taken in December 2024 from an upper part of Belvedere Park in Tunis —  From there, the city appears in the distance, framed by trees and vegetation.

This image is part of a long-term project, Where Dust and Water Dream Together. Rather than seeing the land as something shaped by the city, I was drawn to the opposite view: the city as something built within the land. In Tunis, and more broadly in Tunisia, nature remains very close, even when we tend to overlook it.

As we build more and remove trees, this view becomes a reminder that what we construct exists inside a living landscape. It is not that we allow nature to remain — it is that nature allows us to be here.”

Skander Khlif is a Tunisian photographer based between Tunis and Munich. His work moves between documentary and author photography, exploring memory, land, and the fragile relationship between people and their environments.

Tsawwar is an ongoing visual series in Daftar which explores the stories behind a photograph, taken in the region or by an Arab photographer, written in their own words.
