Tsawwar… Salaheddine El Bouaaichi
"Echoes of Strength is a photograph I took in 2024, one year after the earthquake struck the region of Ighil, Al Haouz. It was captured inside a mountain classroom that had been turned into a shelter by a family who had lost their home. During our visit, they invited us to share lunch with them, a moment filled with deep emotion. On the wall, the presence of classic Arabic letters, the colors of the Moroccan flag, and a crack that strikingly resembles the map of Morocco all came together in a powerful scene."
Salaheddine EL Bouaaichi is a Marrakesh-born photographer and visual storyteller whose work explores the social and cultural rhythms of urban Morocco. Since 2016, he has used photography to document the people, spaces, and everyday realities that shape Marrakesh, blending documentary sensibilities with a poetic visual language. His practice spans portraits, street photography, and close collaborations with the local hip-hop/rap community, alongside creating album and mixtape artwork for emerging and established artists in Morocco’s independent music scene.
Tsawwar is an ongoing visual series in Daftar which explores the stories behind a photograph, taken in the region or by an Arab photographer, written in their own words.
